Review: Although they don't always get the props they deserve, Suburban Base regulars Krome & Time were one of the most significant outfits of the early UK bass era, delivering a string of singles that mirrored wider musical developments between 1989 and '95. This fantastic, five-disc Anthology does a good job in charting that progression, beginning with the 'bleep and breaks' brilliance of 'The Rush (Dub Bass Mix)') (as Kromozone) and 'Fireball (VIP)' (as Timebase). From there on, it's a sprint through hardcore rave ('Into The Night', 'Virtual Reality VIP, and two takes on their most famous anthem, 'This Sound is For The Underground'), and jungle ('The Slammer VIP', 'Final Destination'). Throw in a clutch of cuts as Higher Level, some rarities and a handful of fresh remixes, and you have a genuinely essential retrospective.

Review: Since joining forces as Soul Mass Transit System a couple of years ago, Baby J and D Jason have released a wealth of club-ready 12" singles, many of which explore their love of vintage UK garage. This EP on Vivid is a little more eclectic but no less celebratory or peak-time ready. For proof, check saucer-eyed opener 'Set You Free', where giddy old school piano stabs, stretched-out sub-bass and spinetingling female vocal samples ride a rolling breakbeat, and the revivalist hardcore hedonism of the ludicrously bass-heavy 'Nah Nah Nah'. They doff a cap to their bassline roots on crunchy breakbeat roller 'Phat Booty', before drawing a fine EP toa close with the two-step-goes-Niche heaviness of 'Smoke'.

Review: Whether or not Lennie D'Ice's 'We Are I.E' was the tune that inspired the birth of jungle has long been a matter of debate. Regardless, it was certainly highly influential - a booming, sub-heavy breakbeat hardcore anthem that undoubtedly shifted the musical dial on its initial release in 1991. Here the freshly remastered original - sounding weightier and sharper than ever - is joined by a trio of 21st century interpretations. Solo and Blade kick things off with a crisply chopped and pleasingly rolling re-edit before Horsepower Productions brilliantly re-imagine it as a punchy and powerful breakstep smasher. Arguably best of all though is the take from Bristol's Borai, who brilliantly joins the dots between bassline, 4/4 UKG and saucer-eyed turn-of-the-90s house. Let me hear you scream!

Review: Amen Brother asked Darren Woolard aka DAWL, said to be a regular customer of Vinyl Fanatiks from the hardcore generation, to use his knowledge of the scene to create 'a proper little rave induced banger' and here are the results. Four ravey breakbeat numbers await you on the Pump Up The Noise EP featuring the euphoric, Mentasm-laden energy of 'Moonstruck' which kicks things off, followed by the title track which is packed full of Todd Terry style motifs mixed in with MC chants and rewinds. Over on the flip, it's all about the proto jungle vibe of the menacing 'Freak Of Nature'.

Review: N4 is back with another blinding EP, this time from Pete Cannon who has already had some of these tunes played by the likes of Bicep. 'In My Soul' is full-throttle drum & bass with raved-up sirens and crashing breaks to get the floor in a spin. The Sumgii 160 remix brings elements of footwork rhythms, loopy and cut-up sequences that explode and implode endlessly. 'Tek Riser' is a bubbling and gurgling world of slamming drums and rubbery bass for big room action and last of all is a Shadowchild remix that brings some light with celestial synths and a more slow and pronounced rhythm.

Review: DJ Seduction does what he does best on this new and banging 12" for Impact. Hardcore Heaven is correctly titled because that's where this two tracker will take you: the title track opens up with all the rave motifs, spin backs, reversed stabs and vocal jibes you would expect of a title with that name, all dropped over some big and dusty breaks. 'You & Me' on the backside keeps the high-energy vibes coming with increasingly wild synth lines, crashing drum hits and old school signifiers. Blistering beats for sweaty dancefloors.

Review: Jack Michael has contributed plenty to garage's rich recent years on labels like One, Body Movement and Sub: Conscious. He now returns to Orbital London for four more tasty bangers. 'Mr Nice' has a low end wobble and watery synths that make for a nice sub-aquatic sound. 'South East Vice' is more skeletal and rude, with a razor sharp hi hat but silky chords bringing the vibes. There is a sci-fi menace to 'Rampage' that will make for a more edgy dance floor experience while 'The Grotty Choir' rounds out with pulsing minimal drums and kinetic kicks that are primed and ready to make you move.

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: Lavery's back in his old school Puffin Billy suit for Meditator once again, following the brilliant 'Happy Shopper' on the label last year. Running the early 90s gamut of sounds and samples, 'Hardcore Madness' goes in like Ellis Dee with swashbuckling amens, 'Mickey 303' is full on acid, pitched up vocals a Vampish synth hits while 'Energy 92' brings the tempo down for Rhythm Section-level breakbeat blow-out. Review: Since breaking through with the colossal 'Anybody From London' on Hotline Recordings five years ago, Boris English AKA Borai has proved to be one of British dance music's more cultured hardcore and jungle revivalists. He's at it again here, too, filling his Vivid label debut with a quartet of sub-heavy, breakbeat-driven bangers dripping in saucer-eyed, rave-style samples. He begins with the sharp riffs, pitched down Amen breaks and booming bass of 'In My Life', before upping the tempo on bustling breaks roller 'Dead Drop'. English doffs his cap to spacey early drum & bass on loose-limbed flipside opener 'Keep Steppin', while closing cut 'C'Mon' is an insanely weighty, pitched-down hardcore bomb.

Review: There is no mucking about with this one from Hellfish on Deathchant - it is raw and pure old-school gabba brilliance. The title track 'Crybaby' opens with scorched bass and bright, sharp synth stabs that obscure a stylized female vocal in real grit and grime. 'Time To Get A Job' is a weird and wonderful sound with drunken drum stomps and a hooky melodic refrain that tumbles about the mix beneath stiff hits. It's brilliantly bonkers and then on the flip come two different versions of 'Wanna Go Faster'. The first is brain-frying and intense with frosted stabs and caustic synths and Footburn mix is then a blistering and industrial bit of techno noise.
